The STS Leeuwin II is a three-masted barquentine with over 810 square metres of sail and an overall length of 55 metres, with 16 sails and twin diesel engines for close manoeuvrings. She is Australia’s largest ocean-going tall ship and is primarily used as a training platform, where people learn to live and work together as a 'Team'. The Leeuwin also offers day and twilight sails to the public. Private charters and corporate team building sails can also be organised.
Leeuwin programs have been specifically tailored to enable participants, irrespective of age, gender and experience to extend their physical and psychological limits in a nurturing, non-competitive environment that builds respect for others and their achievements. Leeuwin voyages are no holiday – but they are fun by the bucket load, you will return recharged and rejuvenated. The program is designed to induce in participants a sense of personal achievement through the extension of personal limits. The voyages are suitable fro people aged 15 - 100 years.
The Leeuwin II was built in 1986 to comply with the modern standards of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and with a professional crew of the highest calibre, she may be described as one of the safest sail training ships in the world. Although having the appearance of a traditional 1850’s Barquentine, below decks there is modern accommodation for the participants, with a galley, fresh water showers and toilets. The sleeping quarters cater for five permanent and eight volunteer crew. Eight and six berth cabins are provided for the 40 voyage crew.
STS Leeuwin is owned and operated by Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation Ltd, which is a private non-profit organisation based in Fremantle. All profits made are used to provide disadvantaged and disabled youth with sails to boost confidence, self-esteem and help overcome personal challenges.. www.sailleeuwin.com
