While for many films, this is logical given they are period pieces, the reality of our vast, ever-changing landscapes simply make horse riding a fun thing to do in this country. This is why, whether you are a complete novice or ride horses on a regular basis, you might want to consider including a ride into the sunset on your next holiday break.  New to horse riding? Before you book yourself on a week-long horse riding excursion in the Snowy Mountains, it’s importan... Read more

The Heritage listed country town of Adelong is nestled along the Adelong River to the northwest of the Snowy Mountains. This pretty 19th century town has an array of historic farmhouses, town buildings and plenty of trees, which change colour in a spectacular fashion in autumn. Ghosts of gold diggers long past would likely be thrilled to see how much of their history has been preserved, offering a mixture of charm and beauty to an area that is frequented by bushwalkers and skiers alike, staying in nearby tourist centres.   Things to do: Given Adelong is best known for its golden history, you may want to try your hand at fossicking for gold at Richies Gold Battery located at Adelong Falls Reserve.    Walking the streets of Adelong will provide a feel for the charm of the... Australia
By Kylie Jane Degeling

The next time you plan to take a break, bring your pets with you! There was once a time pet owners wanting to take a fun-filled holiday would need to arrange for someone to watch their animals or pay to send them to a kennel. Today, thanks to countless pet-friendly accommodation options, owners can share their holiday fun with their four-legged mates. This is the ultimate way to enjoy a break; save money you would otherwise spend on a boarding kennel, avoid the worry and/or guilt you might feel at leaving them behind, and instead experience the joy of sharing your special times with a loyal friend. The wagging of a dog’s tail can add to the enjoyment of any special break. The question then arises – what do you do with your pets while on holiday? Few pooches would appreciate th... Read more

Travelling while pregnant
Australia
By Kylie Jane Degeling

Pregnant women frequently hear, “You should put your feet up while you can because once your baby is born, you’ll be too busy for ‘me’ time.”  While there is some truth to this, 'me' time can involve much more than sitting around waiting to pop. Instead, consider exploring the wonderful country you’re bringing your baby into, while crossing some items off your life’s 'to-do' list! Now may not be the best time to try out every wild attraction available in Australia but letting your baby have their first adventures in utero doesn’t need to involve skydiving. Maybe snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef is something you’ve always wanted to try. Or perhaps camel-riding through the vast red deserts of Central Australia, or cycling aro... Read more

Journalling travel tips
Australia
By Kylie Jane Degeling

Holiday journalling for kids: It can be exciting for a child to develop their own scrapbook, and with the many family-friendly accommodation options on takeabreak.com.au, you’ll have endless choices to explore with your children. Each evening, have them write, type, or illustrate their experiences. It may be as simple as asking a preschooler to draw their favourite memory of the day, or asking a toddler to paste ticket stubs, pamphlets and photos into a book alongside their photos. Older children can use the computer to write out their journal entries, or if doing it the old-fashioned way, can neatly write onto the pages and then attach their favourite photos and travel memorabilia.   Including the family pet: If you’ve travelled to one of the many pet-frie... Port Lincoln
By Kylie Jane Degeling

Matthew Flinders knew he was onto something when he discovered Port Lincoln. In February 1802, he sailed into Boston Bay where he found beautiful beaches, bountiful seafood, and fascinating flora and fauna all around. It must have been tough to continue his job of charting unexplored coastline, when he knew he had already found paradise. Secretly he fantasised about leaving Port Lincoln off the charts altogether so that he could sneak back, pitch his hammock, and lead a life of pure contentment while feasting on the gifts of the land and sea around him. But alas, he charted this oceanfront jewel of the Eyre Peninsula ensuring we could all discover her beauty for ourselves. Sunshine in the south: Considered to be the driest state in the driest continent in the world (well…other... Read more

Green Head
By Kylie Jane Degeling

Sometimes, the name of a place does not do it justice. For example, when a person hears ‘Green Head’ do they immediately conjure up images of wildflowers, beaches, and sea lions? Are they likely to imagine surfing, bush walking and snorkelling? Probably not. But one small area of Green Head that does have a worthy name is ‘Dynamite Bay’. Perhaps this would be a better name for this gorgeous town on the Coral Coast of Western Australia because Green Head really is a dynamite place to visit.   Only a short drive from such wonders as The Pinnacles, and with local reefs perfect for snorkelling and diving, as well as an abundance of delicious fresh seafood like rock lobsters waiting in the ocean, Green Head truly is paradise. There is so much for water enthusiasts... Read more

Australia
By Rachel Power

Undertaking a four month journey around Australia with two young girls requires careful planning and preparation. Our WAECO Products have made our camping life much more enjoyable. CoolFreeze CF-80 The most essential item is our CF-80 fridge/freezer. The biggest benefit of the CF-80 is the ability to combine a fridge and freezer in one unit. Having a freezer has enabled us to stock up on meat and other frozen products on special saving us a great deal of money. With the children, it has also meant we can carry food items that can be prepared quickly to satisfy hungry tummies.   The large 80 litre capacity has enabled us to carry a huge range of foods and drinks such as frozen meat, ice creams, ice cubes, juice, margarine, deli meats, left-overs, beer and wine, all at appropriate t... Central Coast audio tour – Talk’N Tours
By Lisa Monk

If you have ever had a guided tour that was less than informative, moved too fast or too slow, or just didn’t have the sort of information you were looking for, then Talk’N Tours may be the answer for you.   There is a series of tours in podcast format, allowing you to go at your own pace, stop, start and rewind at will. The company provides tours in and around Sydney and Melbourne at this point, with more to come.   I took the ‘Central Coast Day Tour’ from Sydney and found it to be an interesting and informative way to learn more about the areas mentioned. The tour leaves from Wynyard bus stand and has bus, ferry and rail legs.   At all points there is something new to be learned and as a Sydney local and frequent visitor to the areas covered i...
