Review - Suite 68
Mt Barker Area,
Adelaide Hills,
South Australia
By Angela Taylor
68 Fletcher Road Mt Barker SA The house looks new, is divided into two apartments, and sits within landscaped gardens. There is a lovely sense of light and space within. Overall rating? Great, with excellent ambience What makes Suite 68 different? The apartment was immaculately clean, comfortable and welcoming and we felt very much at home during our stay here. The house is in a residential housing estate, so it is quiet and peaceful. Accommodation overview We stayed in ‘Apartment A’, which has one bedroom with a queen-size bed and an ensuite. The lounge room has a sofa bed, making room for an extra person. The bed is made up with quality linen and towels are provided. Facilities overview Our suite had a small kitchenette/laundry w...

Review - Pobblebonk B&B
Macclesfield Area,
Adelaide Hills,
South Australia
By Lisa Monk
TakeABreak Best Places to Stay Awards 2009 National Winner Pet-friendly Accommodation: Pobblebonk B&B The first thing you think of when you hear the name ‘Pobblebonk’ is probably frogs, not dogs – and the property is named after the Eastern Banjo Frog and the distinctive ‘bonking’ call it makes. However, it is four legged creatures of the furry persuasion who are the real winners at Pobblebonk – oh, and their owners, of course! This delightful B&B is the winner of the Pet-friendly category in the 2009 TakeABreak Best Places to Stay Awards for its outstanding dedication to ‘fur children’. Pobblebonk B&B is a truly pet-friendly property… one that doesn’t just allow dogs, but welcomes them and caters t...

Review - Blue Breeze
Marion Bay,
Yorke Peninsula,
South Australia
By Kylie Jane Degeling
TakeABreak Awards 2009 Winner, Family-friendly Accommodation: Blue Breeze There was once a time when families were expected to share a hotel room when they went on vacation. Together, they would squeeze into the small room, with the children sleeping on a foldout couch, floor or sharing a bed. Mum and Dad would need to decide whether to go to sleep early themselves, or stay up and quietly watch television or read while worrying whether they were keeping the children awake. Sure – parents could have chosen to pay for two adjoining rooms or a suite, but the expense was often prohibitive. Today, the options for economical family-friendly accommodation are endless and parents can happily take their children on holidays knowing that they can have the privacy of separate rooms, th...

Review - Castle Keep B&B at Thorngrove Manor
Stirling,
Adelaide Hills,
South Australia
By Quentin Long
Glenside Lane Stirling, Adelaide Hills South Australia This amazing castle-like gothic building stands majestically on a leafy street. It feels grand, whimsical and straight out of a fairytale. Overall rating? Excellent, with outstanding ambience What makes Castle Keep B&B different? Located in a relatively quiet lane in Stirling, Thorngrove Manor is surrounded by green and towering trees. The gardens and the greenery of the Adelaide Hills make you feel as though you are in your own private and compact castle in Europe. Accommodation overview An amazing experience! Climb the spiral staircase, marvel at the stone flagged floors and the Angaston white marble and arrive at the sleeping/living sitting area, with nine sides and a vaulted ceiling. The 19t...

Review - Stonewell Cottages
Tanunda,
Barossa Valley,
South Australia
By Quentin Long
Stonewell Road Tanunda Barossa Valley South Australia The cottages are in a gorgeous setting, surrounded by vines and overlooking a private lake…. the quintessential wine experience! Overall rating? Excellent, with outstanding ambience What makes Stonewell Cottages different? The cottages are far enough out of town for a perfect romantic escape, ideal for us as we were on our honeymoon. Even with three other cottages nearby, there is plenty of privacy and the setting among the vines and the view of the lake make it a wonderful place to spend time with someone special. Accommodation overview Our Haven Spa Retreat had a ‘pillow top’ queen-size bed, with quality linen and towels, and also had a wool quilt and electric blanket. Facilities...

Review - Dumas House
Mt Barker Area,
Adelaide Hills,
South Australia
By Greg Barton
11 Druids Avenue Mt Barker SA The large and beautiful front gardens are a welcome surprise and the house is set well back, seeming to nestle within its leafy surrounds. It is a beautiful heritage-listed building, which makes you feel as though you are stepping back in time. Overall rating? Outstanding What makes Dumas House different? The house was originally the home of the Dumas family (Charles Dumas founded the local newspaper) and there are many interesting mementos and historic touches that reflect the house’s history. The rear garden is a stand out feature of the property, not least because of the heritage-listed and majestic English oak but also thanks to the glorious gardens that provide an explosion of colour.
