Tasmania's Wilderness

Tasmania's ancient beauty includes vast tracts of World Heritage wilderness without peer in Australia. These wilds host both soft and extreme adventures.

Now in Tasmania, swapping the lounge room for wilderness has never been easier.

An eco-cruise is one way to pierce Tasmania's outermost regions.  Witness migrating wildlife on the great Southern Ocean and towering coastal cliffs, amongst the tallest in Australia, from a custom-built, ocean-going cruiser.

Or stir the mind while negotiating the temperate wilderness crowding the Gordon River. Meandering through the World Heritage Area the majestic and mysterious Gordon River moves through some of Tasmania's most inaccessible rainforest.  Spoil yourself on a luxury cruise or fly in on a seaplane.

For those who prefer to get closer to the water, Tasmania on the edge of the Great Southern Ocean is peerless for paddling.  Sea kayaking is a thrilling yet intimate way to explore Tasmania's watery wilderness and unspoilt shoreline.  The D'Entrecasteaux Channel looks very different over the bow of a kayak.

For walkers, Tasmania has trails that explore every facet of the island's diverse geography: from beaches to rainforest to alpine wilds, walking in Tasmania will immerse you in confounding beauty.  With more than 3000 kms of tracks  - the same distance as Tasmania's road infrastructure - you can explore the nooks as well as the tranquillity of ancient Gondwana.  Uplifting birdcalls and the rushing of untamed rivers will confine the iPod to the never-never of your backpack while some of the world's cleanest air will rejuvenate and revive.

If you prefer to peddle rather than walk, Tassie's temperate climate is ideal for cyclists.  Cycle east to remote beaches or west to wilderness.  Or you can hurtle down Mt Wellington, Hobart's sheer and spectacular backdrop.

Forty per cent of Tasmania is protected reserve or World Heritage Area listed and a Tasmanian adventure is the only way to get to the heart of this superbly rugged wilderness.
