Editor's Choice - Metung Village

Can you keep a secret?

Metung Village is tucked away, like a well-kept secret, in a peaceful corner of the Gippsland Lakes. This picture-perfect village is almost surrounded by the Lakes. Everywhere you look there’s water and boats. Metung offers a true escape, a chance to share simple pleasures. It’s both incredibly romantic and fabulous for families.

Getting to Metung is easy, as you travel along the Princess Highway, turn off at Swan Reach and follow the Tambo River, within 5 minutes you will arrive at this tiny village, with it’s peaceful atmosphere, beautiful setting and the friendly locals will surprise you.

Boating is a way of life in Metung, and you can share this passion by hiring a boat- from a small day boat to a large, elegant yacht or cruiser. By water you can visit dozens of fabulous destinations: the Ninety Mile Beach, National Parks, and other portside towns.  There are a number charter boats that offer guided tours of the beautiful Gippsland Lakes, which depart daily from Metung and Lakes Entrance.

At Lakes Entrance you can access the Ninety Mile via the Cunningham Arm footbridge, there is a great walk which takes you to the entrance of the Gippsland Lakes system, where dolphins play in the crystal clear waters of the Lakes. There is plenty of family fun to be had with paddleboats and catamarans for hire. Try a round of mini golf. Or spend the day at the beach.

For land lovers Metung is the perfect place to base yourself to explore this fabulous region. There are numerous walking tracks in the area. Nyerimerlang Historic Park is worthy of a visit, a great place for a picnic or barbeque. Take the walk along the shore of Reeves Channel, with fantastic views of the lakes and beyond. The township of Buchan is about an hours drive away, and is most famous for the spectacular limestone caves, which can be viewed with daily-guided tours. The Buchan Caves Reserve  is a beautiful spot for a picnic lunch, you can swim in the stream fed swimming pool, play on the children’s playground or stroll along the impressive system of walking tracks. There are kangaroos and wallabies casually sunning themselves to be seen. If you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of a lyrebird or two.

Cellar door wine tasting can be a very enjoyable way to spend a day, local wineries stretch from as far as Stratford in the west, Swifts Creek in the north to Cann River in the East, but you do not have to travel far from Metung to experience some of the best the area has to offer as Sarsfield and Nicholson boast some exceptional wineries. The Twin Rivers Farm Food & Wine Trail, a self guided tour of the best the area has to offer should not be missed.

But if that is all too much for you, simply wander down to the Village where you can browse the art & craft shops, grab a coffee, or enjoy a quiet drink at the Metung Hotel overlooking the beautiful Bancroft Bay.

Put simply Metung is ‘too to good to miss’, with the best the Gippsland Lakes has to offer right at your fingertips, you can do absolutely everything or absolutely nothing. With a range of accommodation to suit all budgets it is an idyllic location for a weekend getaway or family holiday.
