Land Based Adventure

Seeking adventure this summer? You may be surprised to learn that there’s plenty to keep you active right in your own backyard.

Western Australia is one of the best places in the country for sand boarding.  Lancelin, Esperance and Kalbarri are three of the better known spots.

Here, you can scoot down massive sand dunes at a pace that will boggle your mind and certainly mess with your hair.

The speed record for a 45 degree ‘razorback’ sand dune (as the locals call them) in Kalbarri is an awesome 87 kilometres an hour.

You’ll start the day on the nursery dunes and by the end you’ll be plunging down the Superbowl - an 85 metre high sand crater.

Kalbarri Safari Tours will get you there and back in one piece and they also offer a range of other adventure tours in the region, including a two day camping safari.

The action begins with a four wheel drive trek into Kalbarri National Park.

The twisting 80 kilometre Murchison River carves a path through the rugged gorges of the park, making for some excellent bushwalks and scenic lookouts.

Nature's Window, Kalbarri National Park
The eight kilometre Loop Walk Trail beginning and ending at Nature’s Window is an amazing gorge experience and good for a day trip.

Camping tours into the park include gorge hiking, canoeing, swimming, rock climbing and bush walking.

Still on dry land, but with even more speed than sand boarding is land sailing.  This unique sport is available at the Goldfields town of Kambalda.

Here, with very little rainfall, a number of salt lakes have formed around the town.

Lake Lefroy is the most magnificent.  The pure white salt makes for a striking contrast against the bright blue sky and surrounding scrub land.

The finest view of the dry lake is from Red Hill Lookout.  Here you can watch the local land sailing club members in action as they tear along the salt plans.

Strapped into a land-yacht is an awesome feeling.  These vehicles look like catamarans on wheels and some special class types can reach speeds of up to 140km an hour.

Local land sailer Errol Meredith says conditions on Lake Lefroy are world class.

“The salt lake is flat, hard and huge - perfect for land sailing.”

So good, in fact, that the Pacific Rim Land Sailing Championships are due to the staged on Lake Lefroy on 2006, attracting competitors from around the globe.

The great thing is anyone can get involved.  Errol says children as young eight and people as old as 70 take part. Locals land sail every Sunday and visitors are welcome to give it a go.
