At Lucky Bay in the Cape Le Grand National Park, even the kangaroos appreciate the sun, sand and water. They are regularly spotted lazing beachside and keeping visitors at the nearby camp ground entertained.
While a trip to Esperance is worth it just for its magnificent coastline there is much more to see and do.
There are four national parks within easy reach of the town – Stokes Inlet, Peak Charles, Cape Arid and Cape Le Grand.
Bushwalking, camping, fishing and bird watching are popular activities and there is plenty of four wheel drive action to be had – some of the best is along a stretch of pristine beach in Cape Le Grand National Park.
You can drive yourself, but for local knowledge and country style hospitality jump on board the Aussie Bite Expeditions 4WD Oka.
Owners Frank and Mary Hawkey offer half or full day tours to some of the area’s impressive natural attractions – and Mary’s fruit cake and ANZAC biscuits are hard to beat for morning tea.
Frank delights in regaling tales of his life on the land as a farmer and in taking visitors to little known spots of amazing beauty.
Bay after bay of secluded beaches, each impossibly impressive and more spectacular than the last. Wharton, Orleans Bay, Lucky Bay, Victoria Harbour – take your pick.
Cape Le Grand is known for its wildflowers in late spring. Hakeas are found throughout the area, as are Christmas Trees which are just coming into flower.
Things get a little adventurous on board Aussie Bite in the afternoons with a sand boarding trip to Wylie Bay.
With 45 degree descents, these dunes provide a pace that will boggle your mind and certainly mess with your hair.
Quenching your thirst for adrenalin is Frank’s surprise twist to four wheel driving the dunes – and that is four wheel driving massive coastal boulders. Not for the faint hearted but it does provide a glorious view of the surrounding area.
Despite its reputation as being a long way away, Esperance is actually easily accessible.
You can drive there from Perth – give yourself a full day, or stop off in Albany on the way.
Or for complete convenience, jump on the direct flight from Perth with Skywest which takes just under an hour and a half.
Skywest flies daily and twice a day on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Packages are also available.
