It’s been a while since we’ve explored B&B as a travel option, and I think it will be a VERY long time before we try again. Having booked and paid for a 4-night stay at Isla Park Retreat in the Sunshine Coast Hinterlands seven months ago, imagine our reaction to what followed on check-in recently.
Our accommodation opened via swinging door - which did not boast a lock or even a latch - to the kitchen/food preparation area and dining/lounge facilities for guests, which served three meals daily. The sound of even teaspoons in drawers was audible in our open-plan room. Our concerns about the complete lack of privacy from sounds and smells elicited the following response from the owner of the property: “This is our home, and we should not have to ‘tippy-toe’ around, lock up our barking dogs, or ask the other guests to be quiet because of you.”
The male manager suggested we would be best packing up and leaving and they would provide a full refund. All very odd, but we did as bid, but when we presented ourselves at reception for a refund, the female manager told us in no uncertain terms that there would be NO refund, that I should take a sedative (which she would happily provide me), I should seek professional help for my “issues”, and that we should leave her premises immediately or she would call the police to escort us off.
So it was that we found ourselves on the road, in the dark at dinner time, in an unknown place, searching for alternate accommodation.
In these times of universal belt-tightening, where people are thinking twice about travel, this is simply appalling.
My advice is to stick to branded properties where the concept of customer relations is understood, not to deal with the eccentricities of private owners.
By the way, Tourism Queensland say they have no facilities to lodge complaints or seek refunds, so we are significantly out of pocket.
