Have your say in the ‘people’s choice’ voting on the best family-friendly holiday accommodation in Australia   The 2009 state winners have been chosen for the leading holiday rentals across Australia with guests rating their favourite hotels, motels, hostels, B&Bs and accommodation parks.    TakeABreak.com.au, Australia’s only independent boutique accommodation website, is presenting the “Best Places to Stay” awards for the tourism industry, which recognise outstanding service in specialist segment categories.    State winners were selected via an exhaustive process from over 13,000 properties in 1400 localities and 39 accommodation types. I fondly remember the first time I stayed in a backpacker lodge. It was 1989, I was trekking around Australia with a mate from Norway, and we arrived in Broome lugging our oversized rucksacks off the bus. The backpacker lodge was a short bike ride to the famous white sands of Cable Beach and I was so excited to be in such a spectacular part of Australia. Milling around the entrance were travellers of varying nationalities, some writing in journals and others swapping tourism tips. A friendly long-haired fellow covered in tattoos checked us in with a big sun-weathered grin, while his dog wagged his tail with approval. How to be a happy camper Back when I was in my late teens and early 20s, I use to regularly field the “You’re so lucky to be travelling everywhere!” type comments. It would be from a friend who’d received endless postcards from me, or a workmate in a nearby cubicle, or the person I’d stand next to at the bus stop each day, or even a stranger I’d meet at a party.
