I fondly remember the first time I stayed in a backpacker lodge. It was 1989, I was trekking around Australia with a mate from Norway, and we arrived in Broome lugging our oversized rucksacks off the bus. The backpacker lodge was a short bike ride to the famous white sands of Cable Beach and I was so excited to be in such a spectacular part of Australia. Milling around the entrance were travellers of varying nationalities, some writing in journals and others swapping tourism tips. A friendly long-haired fellow covered in tattoos checked us in with a big sun-weathered grin, while his dog wagged his tail with approval. How to be a happy camper Back when I was in my late teens and early 20s, I use to regularly field the “You’re so lucky to be travelling everywhere!” type comments.
