120 Goulburn Street
West Hobart
This converted church is distinctive in style and the musical welcome you receive from the owners – along with the amazing interior – really sets this property apart.
Overall rating? Excellent
What makes Pendragon Hall different?
It is very rare to be able to sleep inside a genuine old church. Waking up to the sunlight streaming through the enormous stained glass windows was magical and the 25m high ceilings give a sense of space you would never have experienced before.
Accommodation overview
The church is one large hall with two double four-poster beds – complete with curtains. The king-size master bed is at one end of the nave (and is screened) and it is lit by a magnificent four-panel stained glass window. There is another double bed, along with a single bed and cot, near the vestibule. All linen is provided.
Facilities overview
There is a separate large and well-equipped kitchen – essential as this is a self-catering property. The main hall has a large and stately dining table and there is a spacious open plan living area, with a wood burning fire. The generously sized bathroom is in the old organ hall, which is adjacent to the main sleeping area. Pendragon Hall also features a musical instrument lounge and a modern entertainment system – you can imagine the acoustics!
Location
At the intersection of two streets, the church looms out from its surroundings. Signposting to the entrance could have been better, but the owners advise you to call on arrival, as they like to prepare and give you a welcome musical performance. The first impression of the inside of the church is a definite ‘wow’. Pendragon Hall is 20 minutes from Hobart airport and five minutes from the CBD. It is also a quick walk to Liverpool Street, home to many of Hobart's funky boutiques.
Suitable for children? Yes – especially for Harry Potter fans!
Suitable for pets? No
Wheelchair access? Not really – access to the building is fine, but there is a lip on the shower. Check for your requirements.
Perfect for?
This is an amazingly romantic getaway – if you book as a couple you have the entire place to yourself - and would be a brilliant place to take your loved one. There is enough separation of the sleeping areas that it would also suit a small group of friends or family.
Why stay longer?
To enjoy the uplifting feeling of waking up inside a 155 year old former church, to sit by the fire and marvel at the colonnaded interior and to make the most of the many activities available nearby, such as the Salamanca markets, cruising on the Derwent river and the Port Arthur historical site.
Why you wouldn’t stay longer?
The only reason I can think of is that you may grow tired of self-catering.
