Blow Your Cares Away

Lucky enough to have a weekend in Melbourne, we decided to do something different and head down to the Docklands to enjoy a sail on gorgeous Port Phillip Bay.

Once aboard we were given a quick safety lesson and shown where to stow our valuables – important, as if anything goes overboard – that’s where it stays, except people, of course!

We motored up the Yarra River to Port Phillip Bay, passing the navy port and multi-million dollar homes of Williamstown, and watched the spectacle of the loading and unloading of the cargo ships in the docks.

The crew are happy to adapt the day to the wishes of those on board, so if you prefer a sedate motor while you sip a glass of champagne and enjoy the scenery and passing parade of vessels, no problem.  However, if you love to sail, then you can be part of the crew and really get ‘hands on’ with the sailing.  You can help rig the sails and even take the helm, under the Captain’s watchful eye.

There is plenty to see, as this is a working harbour, and if you are lucky you may even see the ‘Spirit of Tasmania’ readying for departure.  We stopped at a small café on the pier in Port Melbourne for a glass of wine. The crew make it a very pleasant outing as they point out the sights such as St Kilda and all the different piers, and they are very knowledgeable about all things maritime!

After a great afternoon of tacking and jibing, we headed back up the Yarra River and enjoyed the fresh air, along with another glass of champagne.  For those who prefer to keep a clear head, tea and biscuits is also an option. Don’t forget that it is BYO for wine and food.

The vessel can take up to 10 guests, although there is no minimum number, and can cater for hens and bucks parties, singles’ nights out… the only limit is your imagination.  We had a brilliant time and the crew ensured that everyone was happy and comfortable.
