  • Relax in the water at Hepburn Springs

Crazy but true – there is a little town of around 750 people near Melbourne that is so invigorating, you’ll actually leave the town younger than you arrived! Well, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but you’ll certainly feel a lot younger. Part of the secret is in the natural springs, each boasting a different concoction of rejuvenating minerals. The rest of the secret lies in the unique and luxurious private retreats scattered across the area.

The historic town of Hepburn Springs, which was established during the gold-rush era by Swiss-Italian immigrants, is reminiscent of the quality health retreats you can find throughout Europe. But you don’t need to strike gold to enjoy the luxury, as there are options to suit every budget and if you have a car you can bask in the beauty of the region while exploring the nearby towns and attractions.

Spa holidays
Before you arrive, book some pampering to ensure you get the treatments you covet. Indulge in some his and her spas, or invite a professional masseur onto your private balcony and then simply dissolve under their expert hands. Consider having a seaweed wrap, mud treatment, or other gooey concoction smeared all over your body to feel your skin tingle with health and happiness. Let your cuticles feel cute again with a manicure, or make your feet feel like dancing after a soothing pedicure. Settle back into hot tubs filled with mineral water, and later dry off by a roaring fireplace. This is a break where every part of your mind and body can feel like they’re on a holiday too.

Food and wine
After an exhausting day of massages, spa treatments and hot tubs, you’re going to get hungry. Now you can pamper your nose and taste buds – indulge in some gourmet food and local wines, at one of the many quaint restaurants of the region. If you’re in the mood for some entertainment, head to the Palais for a yummy meal and a variety of performances.

You’ll find some more luxury and beauty in this neighbouring village. Here, in addition to historical buildings (circa 1800s) and sensual spas, you’ll find pristine lakes which are perfect for picnics, as well as the Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens and the Convent Gallery.

When to go
It isn’t a matter of deciding which season you should go to Hepburn Springs, but rather, which time of your life or state of mind. If you are madly in love, and want to share some special time with your darling, it is a great time to visit. If you’re getting married and want a special hen’s getaway, it’s definitely a good time to go. If you are worn out, heartbroken, depressed, overworked, or feeling generally down – pack your bags immediately and head to Hepburn Springs for a weekend of pampering that will have you feeling like a million dollars.

How to get there
Ideally, rent a convertible and let the wind blow through your hair as you drive into your fairytale. You can catch a flight, bus or train to Melbourne, and from there drive just over one hour to get to Hepburn Springs. You can also catch the V/Line from Melbourne via Woodend and Ballan.

Accommodation
It seems as though someone decided that Hepburn Springs should be the home to Australia’s most fascinating cottages, cabins and villas. Opulence seems to be the only thing they all have in common – each place has cosy rooms – many with fireplaces and spas, but each with its own character and style. There are Japanese cottages, luxury wilderness retreats, an 1860s miner’s cottage and historic bed and breakfasts that you’ll never want to leave. But be warned – once you’ve stayed in Hepburn Springs, you’ll be forever spoiled for ordinary hotels, no matter how many stars. Check out the TakeABreak® Hepburn Springs accommodation options to find your dream luxury retreat.

Ideal length of visit
Hepburn Springs is the ultimate romantic short break or girls’ spa getaway. If a weekend of spas, massages, wine, gourmet food and intense relaxation isn’t enough – you could easily stretch out your stay for a week and explore the surrounding countryside, galleries and parks. Alternatively, consider adding it to a larger holiday in Melbourne.
